Ghent University provides funding for the 24 months you spend conducting research in Belgium. The remaining 24 months of research in the Global South must be covered by other sources. The Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2025 offers a unique “sandwich” program that allows you to gain international research experience while contributing to your home country’s academic growth.

Eligibility Criteria for Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2025

To apply for the Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2025, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Nationality: You must be from one of the selected Global South countries (check the official country list on the Ghent University website).
  • Supervisors: Your application must be submitted jointly by you (the candidate), a supervisor from Ghent University, and a supervisor from a partner university in the Global South.
  • Research Field: There are no restrictions on research fields, but priority is given to topics relevant to the North-South context.
  • Degree Students Only: This scholarship is only for those intending to obtain a joint PhD degree from Ghent University. Exchange students are not eligible.
  • Early PhD Stage: Ideally, candidates should be at the beginning of their PhD journey. While preliminary research is allowed, by the time the scholarship begins (1 October 2025), you should have at least 36 months of doctoral research left to complete your PhD.

Scholarship Funding Details

The Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships 2025 covers:

  • PhD Scholarship: 24 months of research at Ghent University.
  • Bench Fee: A bench fee of €310 per month during your stay in Belgium.
  • Travel Budget: An additional €8,000 to support operational costs and travel expenses for you, your Ghent University supervisor, and your local supervisor.
